“Children have a real understanding only of what they reinvent themselves, and each time we try to teach them something too quickly, we keep them from reinventing it themselves.” - Jean Piaget
In these mixed-age classrooms, the Montessori hands-on learning approach includes a unique curriculum. The classroom environment is designed to include areas of study where the child is impelled to work independently while receiving guidance in a positive and gentle manner. At this age, children naturally express a great interest towards reading and writing, which is why we work with emphasis in these areas. Every new skill deserves the same kind of unconditional and loving encouragement. The children are prompted to seek assistance whenever necessary as we motivate them to persevere in accomplishing each task. We focus our attention on the development of all the rational intelligence areas including: verbal comprehension, mathematical reasoning, memory, attention, and logic. Above all, however, we place an emphasis on the areas of practical intelligence: socialization, emotional management, perseverance, and self-esteem. We consider the teaching of values, ethics, auto-disciplinary habits, order, and responsibility, of utmost importance. |
